OCEAN DISCOVERY DAY 2008

wavy Ocean Discovery Day headline, FREE day of familiy fun and education

The Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary partnered with the NOAA Fisheries Service Galveston Laboratory to sponsor the 2nd annual NOAA Ocean Discovery Day on Saturday, March 8, 2008 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This FREE event was designed to engage residents and visitors in fun, creative, and educational hands-on activities that illustrate why NOAA programs are relevant to the community.   Exhibits included ongoing projects by NOAA offices, hands on educational activities, displays of the history of Fort Crockett (now the NOAA facility), tours of the turtle facility, walking tours of the grounds, and other exciting exhibits showcasing the many local programs that directly affect the community.

This year's featured guests were Jacqueline Stanley and Joel Hickerson.  Ms. Stanley hosted a story time where she read her children's books and showed videos starring the main characters -- wolf eels and leafy sea dragons.  Mr. Hickerson conducted short classes in drawing fish for fun.

Jacqui Stanley gives frequent presentations and seminars at conferences and schools throughout the USA and Canada. She specializes in making the marine environment relevant to all ages in all content areas. Jacqui has a BA from the University of Western Australia and an MA from the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas. She has recently completed educator certification at Western Washington University, and teaches at several schools in Houston, Texas.

Joel Hickerson http://www.grindog.com/

Joel Hickerson is a children's book illustrator and PBS "How to Draw" artist from the kid's show "Imagineland." He is an avid Scuba Diver who still counts the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary as his very favorite place to dive. Joel now lives and works in Austin, TX where he owns "Grin Dog Illustration & Design". You can still find him teaching drawing in the classrooms. He was recently invited to teach a pre-writing clinic (with drawings) at the National Association for the Education of Young Children Conference in Chicago. His latest projects include an illustrated children's Bible (Tyndale Press, Chicago), an animated "Creative Reader" series (PowerHouse Animation, Austin), and an illustrated "Chapter Book" titled "More Caleb & Me Again" (Hester Publishing, Vermont).
