Opportunities/Volunteers

VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers play a vital role in promoting responsible stewardship of the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary. There are many events throughout the year that the staff would not be able to participate in, were it not for the time donated by volunteers. These events include dive & travel expositions, professional conferences, community events and trade shows. Volunteers assist by setting up the exhibits, talking to event participants about the sanctuary program and introducing kids to the underwater world through crafts and fun activities.

We also anticipate having additional volunteer opportunities for general office duties. Volunteers may be requested to help with material preparations, mail outs, copying, etc. Just let us know where your talents lie, and we may be able to put you to work!

REPORT OBSERVATIONS

SCUBA divers can assist with monitoring the reef’s health by reporting observations they make while diving in the sanctuary. Additionally, divers can participate in the Reef Environmental Education Foundation’s (REEF) fish survey program for recreational divers. Surveys submitted to REEF are entered into a database that is used by scientists to identify broad trends in fish populations.
